The HTC Touch Diamond is a bit shorter and much thinner, as you’d expect given that it lacks a physical keyboard. Built quality seemed better on the Xperia X1, but I rack that up to the Diamond being a pre-production unit. Not a whole lot else to say here, since I didn’t get to actually use anything on the Diamond.

We’ll let the picture do the talking:

Imagineng, Inc. introduces “Memic List software for Windows Mobile devices”. Memic List combines a simplified voice recognition approach with the capabilities of smart phones to expand how people list. The resulting mobile phone utility affords people a new luxury to list when needed and have lists at hand.

Memic List can open your lists and add or review items with voice recognition commands like ‘add item’ or ‘review items’. A small number of voice commands means you’re quickly proficient and recognition results are good. The utility of the software lies in its “flexibility to list in a variety of situations”. “Items can be saved as voice recordings inside lists” to offer a mobile alternative to keypad data entry. When adding voice items “the software recognizes the end of speech and automatically trims recordings to reduce file sizes”. “Text data entry is available but voice recording items becomes the preferred method”. Either text or voice items can be reviewed with voice commands.

Acquiring the cadence of voice listing will require a little sit down practice before becoming effortless. A brief pause is needed before speaking to allow the voice recognition code to sample and filter out background noise. Once the rhythm of voice commands becomes natural you’ll find yourself updating lists frequently and enjoy that those lists are readily available on your phone. While text based information is faster to review there is merit to easily capturing list ideas on your phone and in a variety of mobile settings. The software requires no voice training prior to use. Context sensitive commands are displayed at the bottom of the screen to assist in learning and an option allows that display to be removed when no longer needed. A fast choice control speeds data entry so voice items can be added and reviewed with minimal voice instructions.
Imagineng uses the talent of jazz vocalist Lorraine Feather for many command prompts. “The voice is pleasant and a good contrast to the digitized voice” used to provide application specific information.
Memic List is designed and “certified for Windows Mobile 6 Standard, Professional, and Classic devices” and available for download at http://www.voicerecognitionlists.com.
Contractors, housewives, and professionals can all benefit from this new approach to list management. Environment conscious consumers will find solace in a product that can help reduce driving yet consumes no raw materials to produce, requires no brick and mortar production facility, and has no shipping overhead. Merely download Memic List to a Windows Mobile phone and begin listing often and effectively.

It’s been a while coming, but the TyTN II 6.1 performance update is nearly here!

Although not on the HTC website yet, oddly Modaco are hosting the file here. The file name is RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.16.25_Ship.exe and will become available officially within a few days.

The update is for HTC TyTN II devices but updates for branded devices are expected shortly.

Paul from Modaco commented:

“The update adds Windows Mobile 6.1 with improvements such as the ‘Getting Started’ wizard, Threaded SMS and general performance and battery life updates, as well as HTC’s ‘video performance’ update. So what’s it like? Performance IS improved, however with no real video acceleration, don’t get your hopes up TOO much! Thanks to tweaks in 6.1 in general plus HTC’s optimisations, the device DOES feel a lot slicker in use, although if you are coming from a ‘cooked’ ROM you have probably seen the speed improvement already.”

I’m on a quick trip and I had a long drive yesterday with only a short distance traveled because of rain, a couple of car accidents  and incredible traffic in Connecticut and New Jersey.  I can’t imagine anyone traveling like this on a daily basis but I am sure it was just a fluke of weather and Friday traffic.  The end result was that had to stop much before my anticipated destination to get something to eat before it was too late.

So the question was where do I go?  I dislike the off road fast food restaurants and much prefer a nice sit down restaurant featuring the cuisine of my choice.  How do you find the right place and once you find it, how do you get there?  Windows Mobile Live Search of course!

Screen002 So out came my Bluetooth GPS and I fired up Windows Mobile Live Search only to see that a new version has been released.  Windows Mobile Live Search 3.0 was a fast download, a quick install  and I was seeing a few new features like:

Map a contact: For any people in your address book, immediately view their address on a map and get directions there.

View Virtual Earth collections: View custom maps of locations and events that are created on the PC by you, your friends, or the broader community.

Web search: Launch web search directly from the client to find webpages, product price comparisons and reviews, news, images, and more.

Screen001 Very cool!  I will check out all the new features later but I did a quick search for Italian restaurants in the area close to where I was and found a slew of them all within reasonable distances from where I was.  Windows Mobile Live Search gave me the directions and in a few short minutes I was sitting in a neat little place having a glass of wine and ordering my meal.  Of course while I was waiting I was able to find a Hampton Inn within a mile of where I was so I was able to book a room and finally just rest after a grueling drive … hopefully tomorrow will be a sunny day and we will arrive at our destination early.

And our dinner was terrific too!!

So check out the latest release of Windows Mobile Live Search 3.0 and enjoy all the benefits of this great program.  You can get it here at http://wls.live.com

The standard interface of Windows Mobile has its fans, but it’s also made enough people  unhappy to keep a whole bunch of developers in business. Off the top of my head, there’s Spb Mobile Shell, Spb Pocket Plus, SBSH iLauncher, Wisbar Advance, GoodWin, PointUI, all the assorted iPhone knock-offs, HTC TouchFlo/TouchFlo 3D, and the list goes on. Well, today it’s gotten longer by one.

Teksoft has just announced the release of Skybox, a new finger-friendly shell that promises to make the Pocket PC interface easier, faster, and cooler. It gets its name from a design that looks kind of like my kitchen window, a 3×3 rectangular grid with icons for various functions. (Okay, my kitchen window doesn’t have icons, but you get the idea.) It’s highly customizable, from cosmetics to registry hacks, and promises advanced graphics and animations.

Lots of screenshots and a 16-day free trial are available here.

Microsoft is aiming to capture 40 percent of the smartphone market with Windows Mobile by the year 2012, an executive said Tuesday.

The target is ambitious considering the company’s relatively small share of the market for smartphone operating systems today and stiff competition from the likes of Symbian, Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry, and newcomers such as Google’s Android platform.

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS went into around 11 million handsets in the company’s fiscal year 2007, and it says it will reach nearly 20 million devices in fiscal year 2008, which ends June 30, said Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft’s OEM Embedded Devices in Asia, on the sidelines of a news conference in Taipei.

Handsets such as the new HTC Touch Diamond will help Microsoft achieve its goal, he added. High Tech Computer (HTC) is the world’s largest maker of Microsoft-based mobile phones and has been for years due to an early partnership between the companies. The HTC Touch Diamond is a 3G (third generation mobile telecommunications) update to the company’s popular Touch handset launched last year, an iPhone-rival that sports a large touchscreen.

Around 118 million smartphones were sold last year, according to market researcher Canalys. Symbian captured 67 percent of the OS market, while Microsoft came in second at 13 percent and RIM took 10 percent.
